Recording the Heart’s Electrical Activity

ECG (Electrocardiogram) at Orbit Scan Centre is a commonly performed diagnostic test used to record the electrical activity of the heart. The centre provides Digital 12-Channel ECG with reporting as part of its diagnostic facilities.

An ECG records electrical signals generated by the heart and represents them as waveforms. These patterns provide healthcare professionals with information about heart rate, rhythm and certain aspects of cardiac electrical activity.

Why Might an ECG Be Recommended?

A healthcare professional may advise an ECG as part of the assessment of symptoms or for routine cardiac evaluation.

It may be used to support assessment in situations involving:

• Changes in heart rate or rhythm

What Happens During an ECG?

Small electrodes are placed at specific positions on the patient’s chest and limbs. These electrodes detect the heart’s electrical signals, which are recorded by the ECG equipment.

Patients are generally asked to remain still during the short recording period so that a clear tracing can be obtained.

ECG and Echocardiography

Orbit Scan Centre also provides Echocardiography (Echo). Although both investigations involve the heart, they provide different types of information.

An ECG focuses on electrical activity and rhythm, whereas an Echo uses ultrasound to examine heart structures and movement. Depending on symptoms and clinical findings, these investigations may complement one another.
