Ultrasound Imaging of the Heart

Echocardiography, commonly known as Echo, is an ultrasound-based examination that provides images of the heart. At Orbit Scan Centre, Echo is available as part of the centre’s diagnostic services to support the evaluation of heart structure, movement and function.

The examination uses sound waves to generate moving images of the heart, allowing relevant cardiac structures to be observed during the test.

What Does an Echo Assess?

An echocardiogram can provide healthcare professionals with information about different aspects of the heart. Depending on the clinical indication, it may help assess:

• Heart chambers
• Heart valves
• Heart wall movement
• Overall pumping function
• Selected structural abnormalities
• Other cardiac findings requiring ultrasound evaluation

The results need to be interpreted alongside the patient’s symptoms, clinical examination and other investigations where required.

Echo and ECG Are Different

Although both are commonly used in cardiac evaluation, Echo and ECG perform different functions.

An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart, including its rate and rhythm. An Echo creates ultrasound images that provide information about the heart’s structure and movement.

A healthcare professional may recommend one or both tests depending on the clinical situation.

During an Echo Examination

During a standard echocardiogram, the patient is positioned appropriately while ultrasound gel is applied to the chest. A transducer is then moved over selected areas to obtain different views of the heart.

The procedure is generally non-invasive. The time required can vary depending on the examination and the images needed.
